How to write SEO Friendly meta title and description

March 26, 2024

Why Meta Title and Meta Description are very important?

Meta Title and Description are very important to website for several reasons:

  1. Search Engine Ranking: While the meta description itself doesn't directly affect search engine rankings, the meta title is a significant ranking factor. A well-crafted title with relevant keywords can positively influence your page's ranking.

  2. User Click-Through Rates (CTR): Both the meta title and description appear in search engine results. A compelling and relevant title and description can entice users to click on your link over others in the search results, improving your site's CTR.

  3. Relevance and Context: Meta titles and descriptions provide a summary of your page's content, helping search engines understand the context and relevance of your page to particular search queries.

  4. First Impression: For many users, the meta title and description are the first pieces of content they'll see related to your page. Well-written meta tags can make a positive first impression, increasing the likelihood that users will visit your site.

So, investing time in crafting effective meta titles and descriptions can significantly benefit your site's visibility and user engagement.

Guideline that we can use to write a SEO Friendly Meta Title & Description

Meta Title:
  1. Be Concise and Informative: Ideally, keep your meta titles between 50-60 characters. Make sure it accurately reflects the content of the page.
  2. Incorporate Primary Keyword: Place the most important keyword towards the beginning of the title. This helps in search engine ranking.
  3. Brand Placement: If brand recognition is important, include the name of the company or brand, usually at the end of the title.
  4. Avoid Duplication: Each page should have a unique meta title to prevent confusion in search engine indexing.
  5. Use Readable and Appealing Phrasing: Write in a way that is appealing to users, as this is often the first thing they'll see in search results.
Meta Description:
  1. Length: Aim for 150-160 characters. Though search engines may display more or less, this range is typically shown in full.
  2. Include Target Keywords: While meta descriptions don't directly influence rankings, including relevant keywords can make the snippet more relevant to searches.
  3. Describe the Content: Clearly summarize the page content. This should inform and entice users to click through, without misleading them.
  4. Include a Call-to-Action (CTA): Encourage users to take action, like "Learn more", "Get started", or "Contact us today".
  5. Make it Unique: Each page should have a distinct meta description to avoid duplication and to accurately represent the content of each page.
  6. Avoid Quotation Marks: If they're necessary, use the HTML entity " instead. Real quotation marks can cut off your description.

All above are just theory parts.

Let's take an interior design business as an example to illustrate how to write an SEO-friendly meta title and what practices to avoid.

Good Practice:

Business name: "DreamSpace Interiors"

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Services: Interior Design, Home Renovation, Custom Furniture

SEO-Friendly Meta Title: "Interior Design Kuala Lumpur | Custom Home Renovation | DreamSpace Interiors"

Why it's good:

  1. Relevant Keywords: It includes relevant keywords such as "Interior Design" and "Home Renovation" which potential clients are likely to search for.
  2. Location: Including "Kuala Lumpur" targets local searchers and helps in local SEO.
  3. Brand Name: "DreamSpace Interiors" is included to build brand recognition.
  4. Length: It's concise and under 60 characters, ensuring the entire title is visible in search results.

What Not to Do:

Examples of Poor Meta Titles:

  1. "Home - DreamSpace Interiors"

    • Why it's bad: It's too vague and doesn't include relevant keywords or describe the specific service offered.
  2. "Best Interior Design Services, DreamSpace Interior Design, Interior Design Kuala Lumpur,  Interior Design Malaysia"

    • Why it's bad: It's stuffed with keywords, which can appear spammy to both search engines and users. It's also too long and will be truncated in search results.
  3. "Welcome to our site!"

    • Why it's bad: It doesn't include any keywords related to the business or industry and is not informative for users or search engines.

In summary, for an SEO-friendly meta title, include relevant keywords, keep it concise and informative, and ensure it accurately represents the content of the page. Avoid keyword stuffing, vague descriptions, and overly long titles.
